- Linux Enhanced SMBFS
Defintely worth a read. Despite the advanced networking capabilities of Linux, the only network filesystem which is available seems to be NFS. There are others but they are either still in development, not free or not featured enough to act as a replacement for NFS... unitl now. Enter SMBFS. SMBFS allows Linux to mount a remote SMB share but until now it did not act like a UNIX file system, even if the remote host was Samba running on a UNIX or Linux machine. This page is the home of the CIFS for UNIX implementation for SMBFS. Along with the server side Samba implementation, directories can now be mounted across the network using SMB.

Interesting thesis on this guy trying to make a nas type mp3 player cheaply. Seems to have worked. Except it still requires server side software. Basically wants an Audiotron/Motorola SimpleFi but cheap.

Compressing raw audio with the MP3 standard can reduce the storage space required by approximately one tenth. This has made it possible to play audio from devices with limited storage space, for example mobile phones, PDA’s and flash based MP3 ...moreplayers.
- How-To smbfs: smbmnt must be installed suid root
Okay, so I was trying to mount SAMBA shares so all the programs could see them. Sounds simply it's so not! So when I finally found a program that could find the shares. They wouldn't mount. You have to follow this guys code. see note.

Note: for the problem: "smbmnt must be installed suid root for direct user mounts" type in a console to resolve this: $ sudo chmod u+s `which smbmnt` in order to be able to mount the shared directory , and: $ sudo chmod u+s `which smbumount` in order to be able to umount the shared directory.
- Mount samba shares with utf8 encoding using cifs - Ubuntu Forums
I was having the most difficult time in the world trying to figure out how to mount samba shares which were created on a Japanese windows 2000 server and transferred over to my replacement Ubuntu network file server. Nautilus mounted them fine, and displayed the correct folder and file names, but the files were not cashed which caused very slow response times, and I was having difficulty with my keyring among other things.

- 'Linneighborhood' and Samba shares in XFCE with thunar - Ubuntu Forums
An SMB network browser for Linux and X11. This package allows users to browse SMB (e.g. Windows Network Neighborhood) networks under X, and mount/unmount SMB shared filesystems via a graphical interface. It is somewhat more network-efficient that other similar tools because it uses the proper protocol for identifying network shares rather than simply scanning IP address ranges. In order for LinNeighborhood to work properly, you must have the smbfs filesystem compiled into your kernel and have a working Samba setup.

- Collection Scanner Unable To Process Certain mounted SMB share files
Hey, I just moved my music files over to another pc on the network, and set up a samba share and mounted it. I wanted amarok to be able to play these files. I add them to the collection and that's fine, but when I go to scan, after about 86%, it gives me a list of files that it couldn't process. Somehow this leaves me with about 3/4 of my music unable to be added to the collection. I checked the files and they do have the proper permissions, just like every other file in these folders.

- Problem playing media off of samba share - Ubuntu Forums
I'm trying to connect to my file-server (Samba share) and play some media-files on it through Totem and Rythmbox. I can open and browse the share just fine in Nautilus (through gnome-vfs), but when I try to play a file directly off the server, Totem/Rythmbox just complains that it "Could not read resource". If I copy the file locally and play it, everything's fine and dandy.

- cifs mounted filesystem does not show files and directories
I have a Synology 106e (Firmware Version: 2.0.1 - 3.0368). I have created a share (data) on the Synolgy device. I mounted it on a Windows XP system and it works fine. I also tried to mount the share from two of my linux systems (Fedora Core 5 and 6), both with the same problem: It mounts the file system and I can read and write files to it but when I perform an ls (in a terminal) or use the graphic filemanager no files or directories are shown!

- NetworkManager - Linux Networking made Easy
Networking on Linux right now is painful for the mobile desktop user, especially in comparison to other operating systems. A laptop user should never need to use the command line or configuration files to manage their network; it should "Just Work" as automatically as possible and intrude as little as possible into the user's workflow. NetworkManager attempts to make networking invisible. When moving into areas you've been before, NetworkManager automatically connects to the last network the user chose to connect to. Likewise, when back at the desk, NetworkManager will switch to the faster, more reliable wired network connection.

Read "nick at rout" responce to UPnP client, it's perfect, well not really but it is what i'm after. "The other option of course is to simply nfs or cifs mount the video directory of your slug to a subdirectory of /mnt/videos. Then you don't need step 4, the files just appear as if on the local drive, but when you play them they come over the network via nfs or cifs. (cifs is the samba protocol, I believe it is more capable than smbfs but I can't remember what gave me that impression) "
