- Amarok driving you nuts as you try to play music in Linux? (Dee-Ann LeBlanc: Linux at Work and at Play)
I'm an avid music listener with genres pretty much spanning the whole gamut of music types. As such, it's been very frustrating to me that Amarok (a feature-rich music player) for about a month now has crashed every time I try to scan my collection. The "helpful" error message suggests that maybe "taglib " (a library for reading metadata from MP3, Ogg, FLAC, and MPC multimedia files) was responsible. Okay. After spending a few hours searching I discovered that this issue comes up often in relationship to problems with the SQLite (a simplified version of an SQL database engine) database Amarok uses by default.

- Linux is Not Windows
If you've been pointed at this page, then the chances are you're a relatively new Linux user who's having some problems making the switch from Windows to Linux. This causes many problems for many people, hence this article was written. Many individual issues arise from this single problem, so the page is broken down into multiple problem areas. If you really want the security and performance of a Unix-based OS but with a customer-focussed attitude and an world-renowned interface: Buy an Apple Mac. OS X is great. But don't get Linux: It will not do what you want it to do.

Note: If you really just want Windows without the malware and security issues: Read up on good security practices; install a good firewall, malware-detector, and anti-virus; replace IE with a more secure browser; and keep yourself up-to-date with security updates. There are people out there (myself includ ...moreed) who've used Windows since 3.1 days right through to XP without ever being infected with a virus or malware: you can do it too. Don't get Linux: It will fail miserably at being what you want it to be.
- HOW-TO: Building amaroK from SVN source - Ubuntu Forums
I've always had odd problems with the version of amaroK that came with Breezy and Hoary. It is also my favorite application on linux! For that reason I like to have the very latest version of it installed. The way to do that is to periodically build it from the latest SVN source. The amaroK community provides an automated script that makes the process fairly easy, but you have to install a number of development files in order to get it to compile. This how-to will walk you through that process.

- Mount samba shares with utf8 encoding using cifs - Ubuntu Forums
I was having the most difficult time in the world trying to figure out how to mount samba shares which were created on a Japanese windows 2000 server and transferred over to my replacement Ubuntu network file server. Nautilus mounted them fine, and displayed the correct folder and file names, but the files were not cashed which caused very slow response times, and I was having difficulty with my keyring among other things.

Note: It would appear cifs is the way to go for me: "On Windows 2k/XP/Server shares it is important to mount them as cifs. cifs can handle much more files in directories and interacts better with the Microsoft software." -http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/Samba
- Collection Scanner Unable To Process Certain mounted SMB share files
Hey, I just moved my music files over to another pc on the network, and set up a samba share and mounted it. I wanted amarok to be able to play these files. I add them to the collection and that's fine, but when I go to scan, after about 86%, it gives me a list of files that it couldn't process. Somehow this leaves me with about 3/4 of my music unable to be added to the collection. I checked the files and they do have the proper permissions, just like every other file in these folders.

- Problems with Samba share with cifs and smbfs - Ubuntu Forums
I have Ubuntu 6.06 installed on my Acer 1682WLMI laptop. My LAN includes a server machine running FC4, with several shares mounted with Samba. Yesterday, I upgraded the packages on the FC4 machine, and these included Samba, which is now at 3.0.23a. Unfortunately, this seems to have broken my mounted shares, which is annoying as I'd only just got them working a couple of days ago.

- Video playback problems in firefox - Ubuntu Forums
I can't seem to play any type of embedded video in Firefox anymore. Example: if I try to play a video through BBC News Player, MPlayer plug-in begins buffering the video and then stops without playing anything. Same behaviour appears when attempting to playback any type of embedded video in Firefox. The behaviour doesn't appear to be type or site specific. This didn't always happen. I first noticed the behaviour after I removed totem-xine and replaced it with totem-gstreamer. (I did this because totem-xine wouldn't playback video smoothly from a shared networked drive, but totem-gstreamer would.)

A troll will always be successful on a Linux forum, and I'm about to explain why. Despite numerous protests of "Don't feed the trolls" and "The best thing to do is ignore posts like these," people will continue to respond to trolls because trolls (like Linux distros) come in different flavors and varieties. One troll in particular seems particularly impassioned and genuine and so always gets responses: The "If I can't use it, nobody can" troll

- cifs mounted filesystem does not show files and directories
I have a Synology 106e (Firmware Version: 2.0.1 - 3.0368). I have created a share (data) on the Synolgy device. I mounted it on a Windows XP system and it works fine. I also tried to mount the share from two of my linux systems (Fedora Core 5 and 6), both with the same problem: It mounts the file system and I can read and write files to it but when I perform an ls (in a terminal) or use the graphic filemanager no files or directories are shown!

- DLL hell, Wikipedia
In computing, DLL hell is the colourful phrase for dynamic-link library problems coined by Rick Anderson in his January 2000 paper, The End of DLL Hell. Although the term DLL Hell had been used internally for some time within Microsoft, this was the first public article to do so. DLL Hell encompasses the difficulties of managing dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) in Microsoft Windows operating systems.
