- Amarok driving you nuts as you try to play music in Linux? (Dee-Ann LeBlanc: Linux at Work and at Play)
I'm an avid music listener with genres pretty much spanning the whole gamut of music types. As such, it's been very frustrating to me that Amarok (a feature-rich music player) for about a month now has crashed every time I try to scan my collection. The "helpful" error message suggests that maybe "taglib " (a library for reading metadata from MP3, Ogg, FLAC, and MPC multimedia files) was responsible. Okay. After spending a few hours searching I discovered that this issue comes up often in relationship to problems with the SQLite (a simplified version of an SQL database engine) database Amarok uses by default.

- HOWTO: Replace gnome-screensaver with xscreensaver - Ubuntu Forums
Note: I have another guide for adjusting screensaver settings in Dapper without replacing gnome-screensaver. I prefer the method described in that guide to this one, but your mileage may vary. Both have their pros and cons so make sure you check out both before applying the instructions. Problem: Dapper ships with gnome-screensaver instead of xscreensaver, which gives the user no option to set individual screensaver settings.

- Windows to Ubuntu Transition Guide - March 29, 2006. Posted by Jason Faulkner.
Alright, so you have successfully installed Ubuntu Linux, but now what do you do with it? You are in the right place. I am going to get you started with a guide on how to use your new Ubuntu system. This transition guide is targeted at existing Windows users and will show you how to do program installations, a little system configuration, but primarily highlight some Windows "replacement" programs for common applications you can't live without. This guide's intent is to introduce you to equivalent programs to what you are accustomed to and, hopefully, to cover a good amount of what you might want in a new install.

- Extensis (now on one software) Mask Pro 3 - http://www.creativemac.com/
Masking is one of those chores that only the most ascetic of us can appreciate, and then only when we have something really awful to atone for. It's laborious. It's time-consuming. And it's sometimes futile, a fact many of us discover only after hours of attempting to mask out individual strands of hair at 800x magnification. If only a piece of software would come along that could help alleviate the pain.... Well, in fact, if you haven't already guessed, there is such a piece of software. Actually there are several. But today we're going to take a look at one that I consider not only to be an outstanding masking product, but a stellar example of how productivity tools for designers ought to be made: Extensis Mask Pro 3. - Mount samba shares with utf8 encoding using cifs - Ubuntu Forums
I was having the most difficult time in the world trying to figure out how to mount samba shares which were created on a Japanese windows 2000 server and transferred over to my replacement Ubuntu network file server. Nautilus mounted them fine, and displayed the correct folder and file names, but the files were not cashed which caused very slow response times, and I was having difficulty with my keyring among other things.

- Problems with Samba share with cifs and smbfs - Ubuntu Forums
I have Ubuntu 6.06 installed on my Acer 1682WLMI laptop. My LAN includes a server machine running FC4, with several shares mounted with Samba. Yesterday, I upgraded the packages on the FC4 machine, and these included Samba, which is now at 3.0.23a. Unfortunately, this seems to have broken my mounted shares, which is annoying as I'd only just got them working a couple of days ago.

- Video playback problems in firefox - Ubuntu Forums
I can't seem to play any type of embedded video in Firefox anymore. Example: if I try to play a video through BBC News Player, MPlayer plug-in begins buffering the video and then stops without playing anything. Same behaviour appears when attempting to playback any type of embedded video in Firefox. The behaviour doesn't appear to be type or site specific. This didn't always happen. I first noticed the behaviour after I removed totem-xine and replaced it with totem-gstreamer. (I did this because totem-xine wouldn't playback video smoothly from a shared networked drive, but totem-gstreamer would.)

This guide shows you how to set up and use the UTF-8 Unicode character set with your Gentoo Linux system, after explaining the benefits of Unicode and more specifically UTF-8. Traditionally, each set of numbers used to represent alphabets and characters (known as a coding system, encoding or character set) was limited in size due to limitations in computer hardware.
