I'm an avid music listener with genres pretty much spanning the whole gamut of music types. As such, it's been very frustrating to me that Amarok (a feature-rich music player) for about a month now has crashed every time I try to scan my collection. The "helpful" error message suggests that maybe "taglib " (a library for reading metadata from MP3, Ogg, FLAC, and MPC multimedia files) was responsible. Okay. After spending a few hours searching I discovered that this issue comes up often in relationship to problems with the SQLite (a simplified version of an SQL database engine) database Amarok uses by default.

If you feel up to it, I strongly recommend installing amarok from source. There are lots of things that don't work in the kubuntu version, one thing being automatic tagging. It's really not so hard to install from source, especially if you've already installed it via the package as most of the dependencies will already be met.

Both have their pros and cons so make sure you check out both before applying the instructions. Okay, so I was trying to mount SAMBA shares so all the programs could see them. Sounds simply it's so not! So when I finally found a program that could find the shares. They wouldn't mount. You have to follow this guys code. see note.

I've always had odd problems with the version of amaroK that came with Breezy and Hoary. It is also my favorite application on linux! For that reason I like to have the very latest version of it installed. The way to do that is to periodically build it from the latest SVN source. The amaroK community provides an automated script that makes the process fairly easy, but you have to install a number of development files in order to get it to compile. I was having the most difficult time in the world trying to figure out how to mount samba shares which were created on a Japanese windows 2000 server and transferred over to my replacement Ubuntu network file server. Nautilus mounted them fine, and displayed the correct folder and file names, but the files were not cashed which caused very slow response times, and I was having difficulty with my keyring among other things.
