- Amarok driving you nuts as you try to play music in Linux? (Dee-Ann LeBlanc: Linux at Work and at Play)
I'm an avid music listener with genres pretty much spanning the whole gamut of music types. As such, it's been very frustrating to me that Amarok (a feature-rich music player) for about a month now has crashed every time I try to scan my collection. The "helpful" error message suggests that maybe "taglib " (a library for reading metadata from MP3, Ogg, FLAC, and MPC multimedia files) was responsible. Okay. After spending a few hours searching I discovered that this issue comes up often in relationship to problems with the SQLite (a simplified version of an SQL database engine) database Amarok uses by default.

- Amarok TagLib errors - installing Amarok from source instructions - Ubuntu Forums
If you feel up to it, I strongly recommend installing amarok from source. There are lots of things that don't work in the kubuntu version, one thing being automatic tagging. It's really not so hard to install from source, especially if you've already installed it via the package as most of the dependencies will already be met.

Here you can generate an ubuntu sources.list for your preferred set of repositories. Just tick all repositories you want. The default set is selected automatically. If you know another repository that should be included here, feel free to send your suggestion to dennis@ubuntu.com When a repository in this list has a GPG key, you may need to add that to the APT trusted keys. You can do this with the following commands (replace KEY with the key ID)
"Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". Ubuntu also means "I am what I am because of who we all are". The Ubuntu Linux distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.

- Extensis (now on one software) Mask Pro 3 - http://www.creativemac.com/
Masking is one of those chores that only the most ascetic of us can appreciate, and then only when we have something really awful to atone for. It's laborious. It's time-consuming. And it's sometimes futile, a fact many of us discover only after hours of attempting to mask out individual strands of hair at 800x magnification. If only a piece of software would come along that could help alleviate the pain.... Well, in fact, if you haven't already guessed, there is such a piece of software. Actually there are several. But today we're going to take a look at one that I consider not only to be an outstanding masking product, but a stellar example of how productivity tools for designers ought to be made: Extensis Mask Pro 3. - HOW-TO: Building amaroK from SVN source - Ubuntu Forums
I've always had odd problems with the version of amaroK that came with Breezy and Hoary. It is also my favorite application on linux! For that reason I like to have the very latest version of it installed. The way to do that is to periodically build it from the latest SVN source. The amaroK community provides an automated script that makes the process fairly easy, but you have to install a number of development files in order to get it to compile. This how-to will walk you through that process.

- IGN: The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II Review
Battle for Middle-earth II is proof that EA was serious about getting back into the good graces of serious RTS fans. There's a lot to experience with this entry into the series including three new factions, a redesigned base building mode, some awesome new powers, terrific improvements to the engine, a tighter campaign mode, and both skirmish and War of the Ring. This might actually be a detriment to some players who liked the simplicity of the first game, but I'm quite pleased. It's a pretty traditional RTS, but it's also a very good one.

- Mount samba shares with utf8 encoding using cifs - Ubuntu Forums
I was having the most difficult time in the world trying to figure out how to mount samba shares which were created on a Japanese windows 2000 server and transferred over to my replacement Ubuntu network file server. Nautilus mounted them fine, and displayed the correct folder and file names, but the files were not cashed which caused very slow response times, and I was having difficulty with my keyring among other things.
