- Anatomy of a well-intentioned Linux Troll - Ubuntu Forums
A troll will always be successful on a Linux forum, and I'm about to explain why. Despite numerous protests of "Don't feed the trolls" and "The best thing to do is ignore posts like these," people will continue to respond to trolls because trolls (like Linux distros) come in different flavors and varieties. One troll in particular seems particularly impassioned and genuine and so always gets responses: The "If I can't use it, nobody can" troll

- cifs mounted filesystem does not show files and directories
I have a Synology 106e (Firmware Version: 2.0.1 - 3.0368). I have created a share (data) on the Synolgy device. I mounted it on a Windows XP system and it works fine. I also tried to mount the share from two of my linux systems (Fedora Core 5 and 6), both with the same problem: It mounts the file system and I can read and write files to it but when I perform an ls (in a terminal) or use the graphic filemanager no files or directories are shown!

- FreeMind - free mind mapping software
FreeMind is a premier free mind-mapping (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_map) software written in Java. The recent development has hopefully turned it into high productivity tool. We are proud that the operation and navigation of FreeMind is faster than that of MindManager because of one-click "fold / unfold" and "follow link" operations.

- Gentoo Linux Documentation -- Using UTF-8 with Gentoo
This guide shows you how to set up and use the UTF-8 Unicode character set with your Gentoo Linux system, after explaining the benefits of Unicode and more specifically UTF-8. Computers do not understand text themselves. Instead, every character is represented by a number. Traditionally, each set of numbers used to represent alphabets and characters (known as a coding system, encoding or character set) was limited in size due to limitations in computer hardware.

- How to Help Yourself - Ubuntu Forums
I thought it might be nice if we all contribute some tips on common ways to solve problems. If there is a similar thread please let me know and perhaps we can merge them or at least reference it. Also, I will make another post in this thread containing a list of all the commands, configuration files, and all of the URLs. Finally, I strongly encourage others to contribute their ideas and I will add more ideas if they occur to me. Perhaps if there is enough demand, we can make a wiki (again if doesn't exist already)

- How to make all video/audio files work on an Ubuntu Breezy system » Eric’s Blog » Blog Archive
Having trouble playing DVDs, MP3s, DiVX, AAC/MP4, XViD or WMV audio/video files on your Ubuntu Breezy system? Since these fomats are all proprietary, the companies that invented them require that developers purchase a (very expensive) license to legally decode (play back) files in these formats (with the exception of XViD which has had a completely different set of licence/patent-related problems), so Ubuntu cannot legally include these codecs in the base install.
