- Installing MythTV on Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy) with a Hauppauge PVR-150/250/350/500
First, credit where credit is due: I first set up MythTV under Fedora Core 3, using the excellent HOWTO by Jarod Wilson. For reasons better left unexplained, I decided to try out MythTV on Ubuntu. For this, I leaned heavily on two HOWTOS: one written by Andrew Barbaccia and one by Joe Kallo. While each are very useful, I did run into a couple of issues that I wanted to pass along, and therefore, this HOWTO was born. In this HOWTO, I also give you links to various files along the way, so that you can see exactly how it is set up on my system.

Recently there is a place to go for musicians and producers who want to use openSUSE Linux. "JackLab" is a noncommercial privat initiative, supervised by volunteers. We take care of the communication between openSUSE users and rpm packagers, and application programers who are generally developing productive media and music software for GNU Linux.

LinHES is what I called my home entertainment system. LinHES is of course based on KnoppMyth, but the setup I describe can be accomplished with any Linux distro and MythTV. My setup consists of a master and slave backend. My master backend is in my bedroom and it is used to store all recorded programs. My slave backend is in my living room. It's primary function is to entertainment visitors. Both backends are hooked up to a TV via, TV out(SVIDEO). SBE is also hooked to a Kenwood receiver w/ surround(works w/o additional tweaking!). NFS is used to share the files between the systems.

- Linux CIFS Client - Advanced Common Internet File System for Linux
The CIFS VFS is a virtual file system for Linux to allow access to servers and storage appliances compliant with the SNIA CIFS Specification version 1.0 or later. Popular servers such as Samba, Windows 2000, Windows XP and many others support CIFS by default. The CIFS VFS provides some support for older servers based on the more primitive SMB (Server Message Block) protocol (you also can use the Linux filesystem smbfs as an alternative for accessing these). CIFS VFS is designed to take advantage of advanced network filesystem features such as locking, Unicode (advanced internationalization), hardlinks, dfs (heirarchical, replicated name space), distributed caching and uses native TCP names (rather than RFC1001, Netbios names).

- NetworkManager - Linux Networking made Easy
Networking on Linux right now is painful for the mobile desktop user, especially in comparison to other operating systems. A laptop user should never need to use the command line or configuration files to manage their network; it should "Just Work" as automatically as possible and intrude as little as possible into the user's workflow. NetworkManager attempts to make networking invisible. When moving into areas you've been before, NetworkManager automatically connects to the last network the user chose to connect to. Likewise, when back at the desk, NetworkManager will switch to the faster, more reliable wired network connection.

- O'Reilly -- Building My MythTV Box, Part 1: Hardware
I recently started building my own MythTV system, for reasons that are detailed elsewhere. Even though the broadcast flag was struck down on May 6, I nevertheless pressed ahead with building my system because I was sure the broadcast flag would be back. Although the Innovation Coalition won round one, it was only the opening skirmish. Sure enough, it rose from the dead, rather like a vampire, on Monday. The only sure-fire way to keep my right to tinker with TV was to beat the original deadline.
While the Broadcast Flag battle continues, it's still legal to put together your own home-theater PC. Matthew Gast has begun constructing his system and covers hardware in this first installment of the series.

What is StreamBOX-LiveCD? StreamBOX-LiveCD is a selfmade, KNOPPIX based Boot-CD, which is specially designed to stream MP3. Also there are some programs to stream in the OGG-Vorbis-Format. If you ask, why I reinvented the wheel, because you know of the very nice dyne:bolic project, please read my Dyne:bolic page. Concrete the following programs should help to get the streaming working...: * Dstream (selfmade, Dialog based script to stream with Freestream) * Tstream (selfmade, like Dstream, but with dump to the harddrive) * OGGstream (building the configfiles for darkice or ices...) * Freestream * Icecast Server I + II * Darkice * Ices2 * xmms-crossfade
