- Angkor Wat, Cambodia on Squidoo
Last year, 2006, I went to Cambodia looking for the handwoven silk and cotton they are famous for, and I was not to be disappointed. Cambodian fabrics have their own special character, and are famous the world over. I spent most of my time in Phnom Penh, but I also made a trip up to Siem Reap, and the amazing Angkor Wat. After a few days sightseeing and shopping in Phnom Penh (there are some great places to buy handwoven fabrics) I caught the bus up to Siem Reap. It was about a 5 hour trip, all on bitumen road. I was surprised to see dirt roads in Siem Reap, I guess I was expecting something more modern, as there are hundreds of thousands of visitors to the area each year. The town had a nice laid back feel to it, quite noticeable after a few days in the...

In July 2006 I made my first trip to China, on yet another shopping safari, looking for handwoven silk and cotton fabrics for our "Lanna Charm" website. My destination was Dali, in the mid western region of Yunnan province. I flew to Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan, from Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, with Thai Airways, a 90 minute flight. Kunming is a big, modern city, with a population of over 5 million people. It is famous for it's all year round temperate climate, probably because it sits at an altitude of almost 1900 meters, and is known as the "Spring City". I did not find much in the handwoven fabric department, but had a good look around for the 2 days I spent there. One day I was looking for something to eat, and I foun...

- The Taj Mahal on Squidoo
I just returned from a quick trip to India, looking at handwoven products for our "Lanna Charm" website, and one of the places we visited was Agra, home of the famous "Taj Mahal". Finally, I would get to see one of the eight wonders of the world. It is an amazing structure, many say the most beautiful marble creation on Earth. Built by Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan, in memory of his Queen, Arjumand Bano Begum, who died in 1631 giving birth to her 14th child ! According to one of the marble plaques in the grounds, "it is variously admired as a materialised vision of loveliness, a dream of marble, a noble tribute to the grace of Indian womanhood, and a resplendent immortal teardrop on the cheek of time." I think that says it all....

- Weaving Cotton in Thailand on Squidoo
Anyone who has seen any of my lenses will know by now that I am just crazy about handwoven cotton fabrics, as long as they are created in the traditional manner. By this I mean the actual fibers being woven must be naturally produced, hand spun and dyed with non synthetic dyes, and the looms are hand made from local timber, and "people powered", not mechanically driven. Because I live in the north of Thailand, ( Chiang Rai ), I don't have to travel very far in any direction to find a village whose main income is from weaving silk or cotton. I say silk or cotton, because the different villages seem to specialize in one particular style. Most of the handwoven cotton we use for our "Lanna Charm" handbags and shoulder bags comes from a &q...
