Angkor Wat, Cambodia on Squidoo Last year, 2006, I went to Cambodia looking for the handwoven silk and cotton they are famous for, and I was not to be disappointed. Cambodian fabrics have their own special character, and are famous the world over. I spent most of my time in Phnom Penh, but I also made a trip up to Siem Reap, and the amazing Angkor Wat. After a few days sightseeing and shopping in Phnom Penh (there are some great places to buy handwoven fabrics) I caught the bus up to Siem Reap. It was about a 5 hour trip, all on bitumen road. I was surprised to see dirt roads in Siem Reap, I guess I was expecting something more modern, as there are hundreds of thousands of visitors to the area each year. The town had a nice laid back feel to it, quite noticeable after a few days in the... in Public bookmarkswith 2006cambodiacottonhandwovenlastsilkwentyear
Bhadohi, India on Squidoo In September 2007 I finally made it to India, it was only for a week, and it was a business trip, but I made it at last. A week in India is a blink of an eye, there is so much to see there. We were there to look at carpet and furniture, and lucckily the places we visited were amazing. First night was spent in Delhi, did not see much there except for smog a crazy drivers, then the next day we drove down to Agra, home of the beautiful Taj Mahal. I will not go on about the Taj here, as I have already devoted a lens to that which you can find here, "The Taj Mahal". This lens is actually about Bhadohi, a town about 60km north-west of Varanasi, in the same state as Agra, Uttar Pradesh. We went to Bhadohi because it is a major center for carpet manufa... in Public bookmarkswith 2007businessfinallyindialastseptembertripweek

Elephant Polo Tournament, Chiang Saen, Thailand, 2006 on Squidoo In September last year I went on a cotton buying expedition up to the Golden Triangle area, about an hour north of Chiang Rai. While I was in Chiang Saen, I dropped in to check out the famous King's Cup Elephant Polo Tournament. This annual event, which raises money for the National Elephant Institute, has been held in the coastal holiday town of Hua Hin for the previous five years. The organisers decided to bring it to the north, to focus some attention on the Golden Triangle area, as a tourist destination. The tournament has developed into quite an event, and in 2005 attracted 55 players, from 15 countries. But the players are not the only ones being lured, with corporate sponsors such as American Express, British Airways, Chivas Regal, Mercedes Benz a... in Public bookmarkswith buyingcottonexpeditiongoldenlastseptemberwentyear

Mekong River Boat Trip on Squidoo In March, last year I did the 2 day boat trip down the Mekong River, from Chiang Khong, in Thailand, to Luang Prabang in Laos. If you are one of the many people who travel between Thailand and Laos these days, this trip is well worth considering. I went up to Chiang Khong, about a 2 hour drive north of Chiang Rai, got a Laos visa sorted out, which was easy, then caught a boat across the Mekong to Huay Xai. I arranged a boat ticket at the guest house I stayed in, and the boat left at about 10.00 am the next morning. Be warned, the seats on the boats are not padded, so it pays to take something soft to sit on. Also, take enough water and snacks for a day, the boat I went on had a big esky up the front with ice, beer and soft drinks, but thats all. We arriv... in Public bookmarkswith boatchianglastmarchmekongrivertripyear
