- Index of Economic Freedom 2007
The 2007 Index of Economic Freedom measures and ranks 161 countries across 10 specific freedoms, things like tax rates and property rights. View scores and rankings for any country, along with detailed data and background analysis. [Visit the Countries »] or [See Top 10 »] A Renewed Index The 2007 methodology has been revised to provide an even clearer picture of economic freedom by using data-driven equations rather than performance brackets which allows countries to be graded using a percent score rather than a 1–5 rating. In addition, labor freedom has been added as a variable. We continue the tradition of blending "Ten Freedoms" equally to produce a simple, unbiased overall score for each country.

- iTulip.com Retrospective 2006 + ka poom theory
"Here's the grade on Ka-Poom 1999 based on what happened since then with a revised Ka-Poom prediction below. On predicting the timing, length and extent of the deflationary or "Ka" part of the cycle, I'll give myself an "A." It started from the middle of 2000 and ended in the middle of 2002, as predicted. Inflation during 2001 averaged 1.6% for the year as shown in the updated 2006 graph below and it hit bottom at -3.3% in October 2001 as shown in the 1999 original above. Here's where reality and the prediction diverged."

- LiveScience.com When Ants Go Marching, They Count Their Steps
They glued stilt-like extensions to the legs of some ants to lengthen stride. The researchers shortened other ants' stride length by cutting off the critters' feet and lower legs, reducing their legs to stumps. By manipulating the ants' stride lengths, the researchers could determine whether the insects were using an odometer-like mechanism to measure the distance, or counting off steps with an internal pedometer. The ants on stilts took the right number of steps, but because of their increased stride length, marched past their goal. Stump-legged ants, meanwhile, fell short of the goal.
By putting some ants on stilts and lopping the legs off others, researchers conclude an internal pedometer is at work.

- MIT News Office: Goodbye wires…
MIT team experimentally demonstrates wireless power transfer, potentially useful for powering laptops, cell phones without cords Imagine a future in which wireless power transfer is feasible: cell phones, household robots, mp3 players, laptop computers and other portable electronics capable of charging themselves without ever being plugged in, freeing us from that final, ubiquitous power wire. Some of these devices might not even need their bulky batteries to operate.

- New Scientist Environment: Giant microwave turns plastic back to oil
A US company is taking plastics recycling to another level – turning them back into the oil they were made from, and gas. All that is needed, claims Global Resource Corporation (GRC), is a finely tuned microwave and – hey presto! – a mix of materials that were made from oil can be reduced back to oil and combustible gas (and a few leftovers).

- Oil-eating microbes produce green energy
It is estimated that oil sands -- or bituminous sands -- represent two thirds of the world's oil reserves. Still, it's expensive and difficult to extract oil from these sands. Even with today's crude oil prices, the industry is still looking for cheaper ways to produce energy from the so-called 'tar' sands. Now, according to the University of Calgary, an international team of researchers has found a way for using microbes to extract methane from oil sands. With its enormous reserves, Canada could become one of the major oil producer in the 21st century. Field tests of this new technology should start in 2009.

- Our Epistemological Depression — The American, A Magazine of Ideas | By Jerry Z. Muller Thursday, January 29, 2009
Major recessions are characterized by something novel. Opacity and pseudo-objectivity created the crisis today. The history of socialism is the history of failure—and so is the history of capitalism, but in a different sense. For the history of socialism is one of fundamental failure, a failure to provide incentives and an inability to coordinate information about supply and effective demand. The history of capitalism, by contrast, is the history of dialectical failure: it is a history of the creation of new institutions and practices that may be successful, even transformative for a while, but which eventually prove dysfunctional, either because their intrinsic weaknesses become more evident over time or because of a change in external circumstances.

- Out of Africa human origins: Genetic Map
The Bradshaw Foundation, in association with Stephen Oppenheimer, presents a virtual global journey of modern man over the last 160,000 years. The map will show for the first time the interaction of migration and climate over this period. We are the descendants of a few small groups of tropical Africans who united in the face of adversity, not only to the point of survival but to the development of a sophisticated social interaction and culture expressed through many forms. Based on a synthesis of the mtDNA and Y chromosome evidence with archaeology, climatology and fossil study, Stephen Oppenheimer has tracked the routes and timing of migration, placing it in context with ancient rock art around the world.
Journey of Mankind - The Peopling of the World. Who were our ancestors? From where did we originate? If we came out of Africa, what factors governed our routes? And when? Now finally this interactive genetic map reveals modern humans journey of opportunity and survival, confirmed by genetic science and documented by ancient rock art.

- Paying Zero for Public Services | Exploring the interactions among public opinion, governance, and the public sphere
In Doha last month, CommGAP learned about the work of 5th Pillar, which has a unique initiative to mobilize citizens to fight corruption. 5th Pillar distributes zero rupee notes in the hopes that ordinary Indians can use these notes as a means to protest demands for bribes by public officials. According to Anand, the idea was first conceived by an Indian physics professor at the University of Maryland, who, in his travels around India, realized how widespread bribery was and wanted to do something about it. He came up with the idea of printing zero-denomination notes and handing them out to officials whenever he was asked for kickbacks as a way to show his resistance. The first batch of 25,000 notes were met with such demand that 5th Pillar has ended up di

- Political lessons from animal behaviour Decisions, decisions | The Economist
<<stigmergy>><<management>>DICTATORS and authoritarians will disagree, but democracies work better. It has long been held that decisions made collectively by large groups of people are more likely to turn out to be accurate than decisions made by individuals. The idea goes back to the “jury theorem” of Nicolas de Condorcet, an 18th-century French philosopher who was one of the first to apply mathematics to the social sciences. Now it is becoming clear that group decisions are also extremely valuable for the success of social animals, such as ants, bees, birds and dolphins. And those animals may have a thing or two to teach people about collective decision-making.

- Possibility of Life on Europa
Europa, one of the moons of Jupiter, appears to be one of the few places that we might find extraterrestrial life in our solar system (the others being Mars and Titan, a moon of Saturn). What makes Europa such an attractive place to look for life is the possibility that it has liquid water and volcanic activity. Liquid water is essential for life on earth and is the most probable solvent for life elsewhere. Volcanic activity provides some of the heat necessary to keep the water on Europa from freezing and could provide important dissolved chemicals needed by living organisms. The surface of Europa is covered with ice. NASA's Galileo space probe has recently sent back a number of high quality images of Europa's surface. These images hint at a layer of liquid

- THE AD GENERATOR
The ad generator is a generative artwork that explores how advertising uses and manipulates language. Words and semantic structures from real corporate slogans are remixed and randomized to generate invented slogans. These slogans are then paired with related images from Flickr, thereby generating fake advertisements on the fly. By remixing corporate slogans, I intend to show how the language of advertising is both deeply meaningful, in that it represents real cultural values and desires, and yet utterly meaningless in that these ideas have no relationship to the products being sold. In using the Flickr images, the piece explores the relationship between language and image, and how meaning is constructed by the juxtaposition of the two.

- Wired 12.10 (Oct 2004): The Long Tail
This is not just a virtue of online booksellers; it is an example of an entirely new economic model for the media and entertainment industries, one that is just beginning to show its power. Unlimited selection is revealing truths about what consumers want and how they want to get it in service after service, from DVDs at Netflix to music videos on Yahoo! Launch to songs in the iTunes Music Store and Rhapsody. People are going deep into the catalog, down the long, long list of available titles, far past what's available at Blockbuster Video, Tower Records, and Barnes & Noble. And the more they find, the more they like. As they wander further from the beaten path, they discover their taste is not as mainstream as they thought (or as they had been led to belie
