- Technology Review: Physics arXiv blog Best Connectd Individuals Are Not the Most Influential Spreadrs in Social Networks 100202
The study of social networks has thrown up more than a few surprises over the years. It's easy to imagine that because the links that form between various individuals in a society are not governed by any overarching rules, they must have a random structure. So the discovery in the 1980s that social networks are very different came as something of a surprise. In a social network, most nodes are not linked to each other but can easily be reached by a small number of steps. This is the so-called small worlds network.

- Eric's Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Idea: steampunk star wars
Inspired by this neat little project, I decided I wanted to reimagine the Star Wars universe in a steampunk context. I know, whenever anyone reimagines anything, they either make it a) adult and edgy (99%) or b) steampunk (1%), so I'm not getting any originality points, but it's still a pretty exciting idea for me. Meaning I'll be bored of it in a week and start drawing dogs wearing hats or something.

- From Tesla Motors to the “Patriot Hack” Martin Eberhard on Protecting Your Privacy Online
Nursing the best dark brew I’ve ever had, I moved from a great article on free global phone calls to another on the language of gang signs, ultimately landing on a column signed not with an anonymous pseudonym but by Martin Eberhard, co-founder of Tesla Motors. It was so interesting, in fact, that I reached out to Martin after my bear-rich Pacific Northwest roadtrip and asked for permission to reprint his article here. He graciously agreed. This article is broken up into four sections, which I titled: The Patriot Hack - From China’s Firewall to Lockpicking (15%) The Political and Technical Landscape (60%) Strategies to Protect Your Privacy (10%) The “Haystack” Call to Action (15%)

- Schneier on Security: Anonymity and the Internet February 3, 2010
Universal identification is portrayed by some as the holy grail of Internet security. Anonymity is bad, the argument goes; and if we abolish it, we can ensure only the proper people have access to their own information. We'll know who is sending us spam and who is trying to hack into corporate networks. And when there are massive denial-of-service attacks, such as those against Estonia or Georgia or South Korea, we'll know who was responsible and take action accordingly. The problem is that it won't work. Any design of the Internet must allow for anonymity. Universal identification is impossible. Even attribution -- knowing who is responsible for particular Internet packets -- is impossible. Attempting to build such a system is futile, and will only give cr

- How to Write a Good Tutorial at BlenderNation
A few weeks ago I posted an article called 'How to Produce a Good Video Tutorial' in which I summed up a few things that you should keep in mind when creating, well, a video tutorial. If you're more interested in working on written material, then check out this checklist on kingtuts.blogspot.com. From the site: Tutorials can be on almost any subject. All a tutorial does is teach someone something new. Tutorials can be on how to create a cool gadget, how to program in a certain language, how to set up a feature for a web page, how to ride a horse, how to meet girls, or anything else that someone might want to learn. This is a guide to writing good tutorials (ones that will get accepted on this site.) Writing a good tutorial is easy and fun as long as

- phydeaux3: Code for New Blogger Tag Cloud / Label Cloud
Due to overwhelming demand (ok, it was one person) I've gone ahead and wrote up the code and explanations on how to setup and use the highly desireable Label Cloud for New Blogger. Because everyone wants a tag cloud for Blogger. I think everything is correct there, but if you try to set it up and run into any problems I blame Avatar. :-) I've set the page up off-site since I don't feel like mucking with code in the Blogger post editor at the moment. And if you have any questions feel free to ask. Pay close attention to the BACKUP YOUR TEMPLATE before proceding notice. Here's the link to the setup and instructions... I’m a late addition to Ze’s army of Sports Racers, but Jesus Heck, is this fella ever talented. If you have another few minutes (and aren’t already a subscriber), don’t miss “Waves” for a weirdly touching paean to the primacy of the web surfer. Now: off to consider my Power Move.

- A Guide To Twitter: What It Is, How To Use It And Twitter Tools | Lost Art Of Blogging
When I first started out using twitter, about 2 months ago, I was very skeptical regarding its actual utility and purpose, as I found the notion of knowing what people were up to kinda irrelevant. “Off eating dinner,” “My flight just arrived in San Francisco,” “Walking my dog.” Why should I care about anything like this? Well if you, like I have in the beginning, think that’s all there is to twitter, then you’re just making mis perceptions. Truth is there’s more to it then meets the eye my friends.
