  • KDE vs. Gnome by A.Y. Siu
One of the most common questions people new to Linux ask is "Should I use KDE or Gnome?" Unfortunately, the answers are usually useless--anything from "Just try each one to see what works for you" to "Gnome is much better." That said, selecting a desktop environment should probably be one of the last things you worry about as a Linux "newbie." Hardware detection, email set-up, etc. are far more important to day-to-day functioning than your desktop environment. It's sort of like just learning how to ski and worrying about the color of your skis--learn how to ski first! Also, most versions (or distributions) of Linux have a default desktop environment (for example, Blag and Ubuntu default to Gnome, and Mepis and PCLinuxOS default to KDE)

  • Matilda Bay Barking Duck (Matilda Bay Brewing Co. (CUB))
Barking Duck is our interpretation of the little known and very diverse Belgian Farmhouse beers, traditionally made by farmers to feed their workers during summer and harvest; nutritious, safe to drink (the water wasn’t) and refreshing. Made before hops became commonplace in beer so other spices were used as flavouring. It was a time before commercial breweries so each beer was unique to the family farm that produced it. Barking Duck, produced in very limited quantities, combines wheat, oats & barley, two yeasts, three hops and a blend of spices including cassia bark. We thought that since we were playing around with some different spices that we might as well get some spicy characters from an unconventional blend of hops.

  • The Linux Desktop Myth by A.Y. Siu
Great discussion article on why linux isn't on more desktops. It's entirely possible that you may not have heard of Linux. Maybe you own a Mac or Windows computer and don't read the technology news. You may have a TiVo, but it doesn't have a huge sticker on the box that reads "Powered by Linux" (even though it is). You may use Google, but it doesn't have any announcement on its homepage that it's run on Linux servers (even though it is). Whether you've heard of Linux or not--it probably plays a role in your life somehow.

  • Chockstone Interview: Chris Dewhirst
Chris Dewhirst was at the forefront of climbing in Australia during the late 1960's to early 70's. He put up many hundred first ascents some of which are now recognised as classics such as Manic Depressive (15M3, now 25) in the Grampians, Skink (16M1 now 17) and Werewolf (possibly the first grade 20 in Victoria) at Arapiles, the pen-ultimate Victorian aid routes Ozymandias (M4 now 29) & Lord Gumtree (22 M6) at Mt Buffalo and the impressive Conquistador (20) on the East Face of Frenchman's Cap in South West Tasmania. Visiting the US he became the first Australian to conquer the 5.11 grade and is acknowledged as having bestowed chalk upon Australian climbing.

  • Ember Swift
Ember Swift has been performing since she was ten years old. She started writing songs when she was nine, and performed her original work for the first time in grade eight (at age 13). Throughout high school, Ember submitted songs for school projects and would regularly charm her teachers into letting her write music rather than poetry or essays. I guess she was convincing!
