At Route 1 and Muirkirk Road, big changes are in store, said Kevin Fisher, a consultant hired by the commission.

He also said if the Metro subway system's Green Line is extended northward from Greenbelt, as state officials have discussed, it could have a station across Muirkirk Road from the current MARC commuter train station, making the Route 1-Muirkirk Road area into a major transportation hub.
