Dow collaborated with The Keystone Center for Education to develop The Balanced Equation curriculum, which is designed to help teach students about global sustainability and the role chemistry can play in developing long-lasting solutions. It is also designed to engage students in discussions about the importance of considering people, their needs and their environment. The Balanced Equation curriculum uses a hands-on inquiry-based approach that integrates science, math, language arts and social studies education and skills in ten lesson plans. Teacher's Guide to Specific Sections Introduction Let students read through the Introduction on their own. Ask them why the discovery that the universe was expanding was so unexpected. Point out that its discovery required three separate threads to come together: Einstein's General Relativity, Slipher's measurements of redshifts, and the building of the new 100" telescope on Mount Wilson. Ask them how the three other lines of evidence support the big bang theory. Get them thinking about how different lines of evidence add up to support a scientific theory. Ask: what makes a good theory?

- The Innovative Educator: 23andMe Provides Authentic and Personalized Learning Opportunities in Genetics, & DNA, Biology, Health
So, how can this be used in the classroom? Even without sending in your DNA for sampling 23andMe puts a lot of the study of genetics and ancestry into context in a way that is more interesting and compelling then what I ever learned in school. The website provides a collection of educational materials to guide educators and learners on a personal journey of genetic discovery. Here are some of the great learning resources 23andMe offers to enable visitors to discover the world of genetics.
A great place to start with students would be with the Variations section which highlights stories of famous people and how their genes affected them. This can be tied to an activity where students reflect on how they think their genes may have shaped who they are or ...
