There is almost always an underlying bony prominence or exostosis. In rare cases, the abnormality may be from an irregularity in the sole of the shoe. A hyperkeratotic, painful papule on the sole, dorsa of the toes or in the web spaces is characteristic of a corn, which is also known as a nucleated callus ( ).
