  EPIDERMAL Hyperkeratoses (corns, calluses) Corn The corn is a hyperkeratotic papule on the sole or toe, which results from constant pressure at that site. There is almost always an underlying bony prominence or exostosis. In rare cases, the abnormality may be from an irregularity in the sole of the shoe. A hyperkeratotic, painful papule on the sole, dorsa of the toes or in the web spaces is characteristic of a corn, which is also known as a nucleated callus ( ). Paring reveals the characteristic translucent core of a corn, in contrast to a verruca, which reveals black dots and bleeding ( ).
