There are a number of variations of the term Kaula in the traditional Sanskrit texts. They are: Kula - means "group" or "family" - an entity composed of a number of persons or objects; a deeper meaning of Kula is that of manifestation, as the universe is considered the ultimate group of objects and beings Akula - is that which transcends the Kula; transcendence; Shiva; the term is formed by negation: the prefix "A" is a negative, thus "Akula" is "Non-Kula"; non-kula is beyond kula, beyond the manifested, exterior, thus, supreme; such an attribute belongs only to Shiva Kaula - is the name of the spiritual school; a second meaning is that of ultimate reality, containing both Kula (the groups of elements) and Akula (that which transcends the groups) Kauliki
