  • National Research Universal (NRU) Reactor
NRC's National Research Universal (NRU) reactor in Chalk River, ON, is Canada's largest and most productive science facility. It's the world's biggest producer of medical isotopes: enough to treat or diagnose cancer, heart disease and other illnesses in 20 million people yearly. The NRU is also the centre for research to develop and support Canada's CANDU nuclear power stations. The neutrons the NRU produces are used for world-leading NRC materials research. The image shows the interior of the cathedral-sized NRU reactor hall. Note the person ( on right ) atop the structure containing the reactor core.
