“What does HC stand for? I guess Hank’s mpeg-2 enCoder would fit since the author goes by the name of Hank. Either way, HC has quickly developed into a very interesting alternative to expensive MPEG-2 encoders like CCE SP. I leave it up to you to decide which one is better, but you can certainly not beat the pricetag - and many applications using MPEG-2 encoders have been quick to support HC as well.”

FFDSHOW is a filter used with your DVD, Mpeg2, Mpeg1 and most Mpeg4 codec’s. Ffdshow allows you to make changes to the video stream real-time digitally, like sharpening and denoising. It’s sort of like digitally enhancing the video, to perfectly match your system, while playing it back, real time.

VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility for 32-bit Windows platforms (95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP), licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images. Changelog:

VirtualDub 1.6.12 has been posted to SourceForge. It took a long time primarily because I spent a lot of time reworking the timing logic in the capture module and going back and forth with some users who were willing to test internal builds with varying balances of breakage and functionality. Special props go to the users with handles Moitah and i4004 on the forums, who graciously spent a lot of time telling me that my resynchronizer sucked and that giving me hard data as to what was going on. Because the resynchronizer was quite heavily reworked, and because I sneaked in several features, both capture and non-capture, this build is marked as experimental.

I basically started VirtualDub in college to do some quick capture-and-encoding that I wanted done; from there it's basically grown into a more general utility that can trim and clean up video before exporting
