Chances looked slim that consumers will be spared a DVD format war, as the Blu-Ray backers of one standard said on Friday there was no common ground for a unified format and it was on track for a market launch within a year. "If we want a unified standard, it has to be better than the sum of the parts. We would like to find something that's better in the other standard than ours, but we haven't found it," said Frank Simonis, a spokesman for backers of the Blu-ray standard. Speaking on the sidelines of the IFA consumer electronics trade fair, Simonis said the Blu-ray association was ready to lay down the specifications of the higher-capacity DVD format in the spring of 2006.

In this electronic age, there's a growing number of collections of audio, video, ebooks, and other personal content on electronic media. It's stored in various compressed formats, often without concern for whether or not that format will be of any use in future years. Some formats like text, mp3, pdf, etc are very likely to be useful even in a decade. Others like DRM'd proprietary ebook formats are much less likely to be useful. But how about something like DivX? And even our beloved iSilo format leaves us wondering about longevity of content availability. (But that wouldn't stop me from using it, because it's such a great program.)

Holographic storage goes beyond current storage limits of medium such as cd's or hard drives by not just recording on the surface but on the complete depth of that medium. Holographic storage doesent just record one bit at a time like other storage technology but can record and read millions of bits of information in parrellel with one flash of light thus increasing the transfer rates of reading and writing. Holograph storage hopes to be the next generation of storage by combining fast transfer of data, releible, derable and low cost media. Holographic storage can put 2gb on a stamp, 20gb on a credit card or 200gb on a cd sized disk.
