Introduction - towards a definition of 'Differentiation'

Differentiation is the adjustment of the teaching process according to the learning needs of the pupils.

It can be aimed at:
bullet

A whole class
bullet

Groups within the class
bullet

Individuals

Some people still deny that differentiation exists: http://education.guardian.co.uk/egweekly/story/0,5500,897299,00.html is a very hostile article in the Education Guardian, describing differentiation as 'just another pressure meted out by managers', and showing a clear misunderstanding of what differentiation is!

James Hansen heads NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York. A physicist and astronomer by training, he began his career studying the clouds on Venus. Since the late 1970s he has been studying and modelling the human impact on Earth's climate, and has published more than 100 papers. He entered the public spotlight in the 1980s with his outspoken testimony to congressional committees on climate change. Last year he made headlines when he spoke out against attempts by the US administration to gag climate scientists.
