The weight of the air above an object exerts a force per unit area upon that object and this force is called pressure. Variations in pressure lead to the development of winds, which in turn influence our daily weather. The purpose of this module is to introduce pressure, how it changes with height and the importance of high and low pressure systems. In addition, this module introduces the pressure gradient and Coriolis forces and their role in generating wind. Local wind systems such as land breezes and sea breezes will also be introduced

We're pleased to announce the 2011 SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Environmental Excellence Awards. Since 1993, the awards have recognized the outstanding efforts of students and teachers across the country who are working at the grassroots level to protect and preserve the environment. Over the last 17 years, we've awarded $1.7 million to more than 150 schools in 35 U.S. states/territories. In 2004, the awards program was expanded to include community groups who are protecting planet Earth. See site for 12/2011!!

Wind Powering America and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) launched the Wind for Schools project in 2005 by conducting a pilot project in Colorado that resulted in one small wind turbine installed in Walsenburg, wind energy curriculum development, and a great deal of enthusiasm for the Wind for Schools project's potential. The Wind for Schools project works to replicate the process piloted in Walsenburg by installing many more small wind turbines, engaging local citizens in a wind energy discussion, and developing a knowledge base for wind energy within schools.
