The Earth Exploration Toolbook is a collection of computer-based Earth science activities. Each activity, or chapter, introduces one or more data sets and an analysis tool that enables users to explore some aspect of the Earth system. Step-by-step instructions in each chapter walk users through an example — a case study in which they access data and use analysis tools to explore issues or concepts in Earth system science. In the course of completing a chapter, users produce and analyze maps, graphs, images, or other data products. The ultimate goal of each activity is to build user's skills and confidence so they can use data to conduct their own investigations of the Earth system.

Fun-size activities are short 5-15 minute activities that enliven lessons. They range from short games and word plays through to quick demonstrations. Many of these have been kindly donated by teachers. Fun-size is particularly useful when you are working outside your specialist area at KS3. These activities are based around the 'Who am I ? ' theme. If you would like to contribute ideas for future themes, please get in touch.

Online science projects provide active and engaged learning, along with encouraging students to develop a better understanding of science. Students are also more likely to retain the knowledge gained through these online activities, because they are more connected with the learning process. The collaborative nature of the science projects listed below help students develop the ability to work in both team-based and independent work.

Students learn how to conduct science investigations in the same manner as scientists, as they learn to analyze sets of online real time data to solve problems. Using real time data for developing quantitative literacy in project-based learning science activities focuses on students’ ability to use critical thinking and mathematical reasoning skills to draw sound conclusions during science investigations. While quantitative skills are used heavily in math and science, it is not exclusive to either content area. It is a necessary skill used for decision-making and an ability to understand data by applying numerical insight into experimental findings.

We're taking a systems approach to learning about the Earth using real scientific data. Our goal is to design easy-to-use curriculum activities and simple, intuitive computer interfaces for accessing online data. It's all part of a NOAA-supported effort called the NODE Project. 5 levels of modules. Encourages looking for patterns and associations.
