Tom Phat offers modern (westernised) asian food with panache. Brekky consists of a range of bread or egg based offerings all with innovative departures from the usual. Vietnamese fried eggs offers up 2 eggs on crusty fresh with baguette (the french influence in vietnam) the point of difference from every other cafe being the dash of sesame oil the eggs were cooked with and the splash of chili and fish sauce to finish ($7.50). Likewise the omelette comes with crispy roti, chives and bacon and a laotian salsa (tomato and tasty++) for $9, while the scrambled eggs are set apart by the inclusion of chinese sausage (lap cheung-a sweet pork meat) and tomato ($8).

A sobering and interesting look at the single-origin world of chocolate.
Chocoholics are starting to sound like wine judges, and Helen Greenwood wants to taste the excitement. Fanciers of single-origin chocolate take the wine analogy further. Like grapes, they argue, cacao beans reflect the characteristics of the soil in which the cacao trees grow and this lends the final product its individual flavour. It's basically the same as the famous wine concept of terroir.

At Irrewarra Sourdough we make bread with real flavour and texture using traditional bread-making techniques. Our breads are 100% authentic sourdough. That means they are made using as a leaven, a culture of wild yeasts and bacteria which naturally occur in the air and flour. Our culture was created by allowing these natural yeasts and bacteria to multiply in a mixture of flour and water which is then used each time we bake. This method is the original bread-making process used before baker’s yeast was developed.

At last, the owners of the Mecca group (there are versions of the restaurant in both Brisbane and Melbourne), Damien Trytell and Cath Claringbold, have brought the Canberran foodie faithful their own Mecca. The first thing you see when you walk past the alfresco area - complete with burbling fountain - and in the front door is the beautiful Moroccan-themed interior. Long red paper lights hang from the ceiling, screen-printed in a gold leaf design that features in all Mecca restaurants.

Huge antique mirrors against stunning pink wallpaper, comfortable chesterfields and big glass tabletops set the scene for serious romance and civilised chatter. Gourmet chocolates are elegantly displayed in a glass cabinet like finely jewellery, and there are other goodies, like the rich and real hot chocolate, made from melted Belgian chocolate pieces, and a chocolate fondue fruit platter for two, guaranteed to keep the most ardent chocoholic happy forever.
