Dean Potter punches a button on a plastic wristwatch looped around his climbing harness. His partner, Tim O'Neill, leaps at the rock before him, jamming freshly taped fingers into a slender crack. Above them soars the great granite parabola of the most famous big-wall route in Yosemite Valley—or, for that matter, the world: The Nose of El Capitan. At just under 3,000 vertical feet, with 36 pitches, The Nose requires three harrowing pendulum swings and the negotiation of a hair-raising crux section known as the Great Roof—an overhanging shelf 2,000 feet off the deck, with a crack at the back so narrow that neither the towering Potter nor the diminutive O'Neill can wedge his fingers into it.

Chris Dewhirst was at the forefront of climbing in Australia during the late 1960's to early 70's. He put up many hundred first ascents some of which are now recognised as classics such as Manic Depressive (15M3, now 25) in the Grampians, Skink (16M1 now 17) and Werewolf (possibly the first grade 20 in Victoria) at Arapiles, the pen-ultimate Victorian aid routes Ozymandias (M4 now 29) & Lord Gumtree (22 M6) at Mt Buffalo and the impressive Conquistador (20) on the East Face of Frenchman's Cap in South West Tasmania. Visiting the US he became the first Australian to conquer the 5.11 grade and is acknowledged as having bestowed chalk upon Australian climbing.

Wood offers great advantages for extensive training workouts. In many ways, wood is one of the most remarkable natural materials the planet has to offer us. It is strong, lightweight, workable and undeniably beautiful. It also grows on trees, so if we’re wise about its use, it can always be replenished. Another amazing feature is that it feels incredible to the touch. When used in training products, it seems to do the impossible: provide enough texture for excellent grip while having minimal impact on the skin.

Melbourne is the largest city in Victoria, situated on the south-eastern coast of Australia. (See map). The nearest outdoor climbing within an hour from Melbourne, with a decent sized crag, is Werribee Gorge or possibly Camel's Hump, though there are closer, but smaller cliffs. Slightly further away (over the hour), you might look into Warragul Rocks at Tallarook, or the larger destination of Cathedral Range. The You Yangs has hundreds of routes only 40 minutes drive away, and Ben Cairn is also fairly close by, though only a summer destination. Eventually, however, you'll need to make the long drive (3 to 4 hours), to Mt Arapiles, the Grampians or Mt Buffalo to experience some real climbing. Have fun!
