With a Chili's nearby and no shortage of Mexican restaurants already in the area, chef Alex Laredo decided to try something different when Mango's Grill opened its doors on Route 1 last February.

Laredo said he chose to serve Tex-Mex, a combination of Southwest-American and Mexican entrees. So far, Laredo said, his decision seems to have been a good one.

You walk in the door and immediately hear the sounds of Caribbean music. Customers, some tapping their feet, wait in line to place their orders at a long counter filled with a variety of entrees and vegetables. On the left, an ocean scene, complete with palm trees and a bright orange-and-yellow sunset takes up an entire wall. On the right, a painting of a large turtle fills another wall, appearing to swim through waters that are several brilliant hues of blue. And then the spicy aromas hit you, and you know you're in Island Flavors, a new Caribbean cuisine restaurant that opened April 21 in the Crystal Plaza Shopping Center on Route 197.
