"And then there is the violence that happens at clubs. If you go to the club and a band calls out your neighborhood but not theirs, a person could get jealous, and a fight breaks out and you get thrown out of the club. But it doesn't end, because then the neighborhood you were fighting comes through your hood and starts shooting at your hood. May 11, 2007

Nightspots in the District and Prince George's County have been under pressure in recent months after several people were shot in or near the establishments. In the District, a 17-year-old was killed in January, prompting public outcry and proposed legislation aimed at stemming the bloodshed. In Prince George's, county officials briefly ordered nine nightclubs shut down last month, saying they were magnets for violent crime. On Saturday morning, a man was shot outside one of those clubs after a fight. May 28, 2007

A man shot at a Prince George's County nightclub early Saturday is in critical condition, police said. Police said the man was shot in the upper body just after 3 a.m. at the Classics nightclub on Allentown Road. Officers said they have made five arrests and seized four weapons in the case.

Detectives said the shooting stemmed from an argument inside the club. Police were not sure if the shooting happened inside or out, but said the incident was on club property.

In the District's affluent Chevy Chase neighborhood, the thefts began when the spring rains arrived. Copper downspouts vanished from the side of a house, causing its basement to flood. Later, someone was spotted pulling the gutters off another residence. In all, thieves hit about 15 homes, police say, making off with a commodity that is more popular than ever on the black market: used copper. July 25, 2007

From today’s Post: an article on the standoff between P.G. County and club owners over increasing violence at late-night venues. Representatives of D.C.’s go-go community went to Maryland to try to mediate—and offered some ideas for how to help: “Speakers offered suggestions such as requiring people in clubs who get in fights to attend peace training, copying the IDs of troublemakers, and establishing security standards.”

What in the hell is “peace training”? These people seem to have made a profession out of it. I’m afraid we’ve finally gone too far.
