  • Fluency Rubric (DVD):
    Debbie Diller It may be a little tricky explaining what fluency is to a group of third-graders; but they can recognize it when they hear it. Working with teacher Lisa Gregory's students in their Houston, Texas, classroom, Debbie introduces the concept of fluency and gives them a rubric so they can self-assess and score their fluency on a four-step scale. To help students become conscious of what fluent and not-so fluent readers sound like, Debbie reads passages, modeling the four levels of fluency contained in the rubric.

    At the heart of Inside Teaching is the challenge to capture the wisdom of practice. Here K-12 teachers and teacher educators document their practice, reflect on their teaching and build on each other's work. On their multimedia records of teaching practice, you can find videos of teaching, examples of lesson plans, practitioner reflections and narratives, images of student work, and many other documents of teaching and learning.     Spotlight on Small Groups gives viewers an in-depth look at two reading groups led by master teacher and author Debbie Diller. Debbie leads the groups through a structured routine (introduction, guided practice, conferring, check-in, and more practice), demonstrating how to balance whole-group and differentiated instruction and showing how visual aids such as strategy bookmarks pique student interest. One group in the video focuses on vocabulary development, working with a nonfiction title; the other shows how to teach the strategy of inferring in fiction. The third-graders in the groups are English language learners, with their regular teacher, Lisa Gregory, observing and debriefing with Debbie after each lesson.

In this four-tape video series, Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis spend a week with Jessica Lawrence and her middle school language arts students.     The Common Sense of Differentiation: Meeting Specific Learner Needs in the Regular Classroom Video Series. The series includes ELLs. Program 1 Discovering Learner Needs, This section includes various assessment strategies and purposes. Program 2, Techniques for Adjusting Instruction, to help teachers explore techniques for addressing students' diverse learning needs. Teachers in the video explain and demonstrate how they determine "clusters" of learning needs among students in their classroom and use a range of techniques to help students draw on their strengths and overcome learning problems.   • The SIOP Model: Sheltered Instruction for Academic Achievement
    This video/DVD illustrates a research-based model of sheltered instruction, known as the SIOP Model, that has raised achievement levels of English language learners. Filmed in a documentary style, this video presents each of the SIOP’s eight components through footage from the math, science, and social studies classrooms of six exemplary teachers at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

    The four videos by Ralph Fletcher and JoAnn Portalupi (developed at Bailey's Elementary School, a school with many ELLs in the outskirts of Washington DC) cover all the practical components necessary for establishing and implementing a successful writing workshop, including the importance of choice, creating a risk-taking environment, the difference between skills and craft, the writer's notebook, the writing conference, revision, the role of literature, and much more. When used in conjunction with the authors' books, Craft Lessons and Nonfiction Craft Lessons, these programs provide a practical resource on how best to teach writing.
